Why Pie?
This is the question my friends are asking with a mixture of amusement and incredulity. I get it: before this, I had spent approximately zero minutes baking. I have always loved pie, the eating part, and the charm of pie shops. But then, a school assignment & a series of events collided, and the idea for Bake Sale was born.
Kevin and I dug out the stand mixer, an engagement gift from my grandmother, that had been sitting unused in a cabinet for 16 years. We made a wild blueberry and lemon pie, and we were hooked.
We discovered the magic of pie and pie-making. As I stood in the kitchen, listening to music and covered in flour, memories of my childhood on the farm and of my cherry pie-loving dad came rushing in. I can hear my mother saying to my father, “Call your brother, and see if he wants to come for pie.” I see them sitting around the kitchen table, drinking coffee and eating pie, telling the same stories over and over again and laughing like they hadn’t heard them before.
That’s the magic of pie. It brings people together. It echoes simplicity, beauty, generosity, and community. Pie says I love you, or I’m sorry for your loss, or I am grateful to know you; when there are no words, pie says it all.
Bake Sale is a fusion of our love of pie-making and our concern for the people in our communities who are in need. Bake Sale is not a business, but an offering– our humble attempt to nourish and care for our neighbors. We plan to do it one pie at a time, donating the proceeds from pie sales to organizations that work to address food insecurity.
We hope you’ll come for pie.
